For 25 years Tepeyac Institute has offered courses in theology, scripture, social justice, and spirituality with local and visiting international faculty from major Catholic Universities. Courses will be offered this summer to:

* foster spiritual growth
* update theology and religious formation
* assist you in gaining pastoral skills
* meet other ministers throughout the diocese
* serve for re-certification ( 8 hours)
* all classes will be eligible for renewal purposes

Nancy Pineda-Madrid, Ph.D., es Profesora Asociada de Teología Latina/o Minis-terio de Boston College. Tiene un Doctorado en Teología Sistemática y Filosófica de la Union Teológica de Graduados (Berkeley, California), y una Maestría en Divinidad de la Universidad de Seattle (Seattle, Washington). La obra publicada de la Dra. Pineda-Madrid incluye su libro, Suffering and Salvation in Ciudad Juárez, (Fortress Press, 2011).

6.You Want Me? To do what? Evangelize?

To “evangelize” is such a scary word for most Catholics. What do we tell others about our faith when we are asked? What is it that we believe and how can we put it into words? We need to become what we believe in order to proclaim; we evangelize through our witness and our words.

Elba Maria Stell is native El Pasoan with 37 years’ experience in education. She is currently Tepeyac faculty member and has completed Tepeyac three-year Theology Certificate Program in 2011.

2. La sustentabilidad y la misión Cristiana: El Evangelio y el medio ambiente

Los participantes del curso examinarán en forma sistemática las fuentes bíblicas y magisteriales que fundamentan nuestro compromiso con una relación más sana y responsable con el medio am-biente del planeta. Al final del curso, podrán explicar en términos teológicos las razones que apoyan un estilo de vida ecológicamente sustentable, vinculados directamente con la misión de la Iglesia.
Padre Bob Mosher, SSC, PhD., obtuvo su grado de doctorado en Misionología de la Universidad Pontificia Gregoriana en Roma en 1995. Actualmente es director del Centro Misionero Columban en El Paso, hospedando a grupos y organizaciones dedi-cados a la defensa de los derechos humanos y ambientales, especialmente de los mi-grantes.

4. The New Evangelization

This is the topic of Pope Benedict XVI’s invitation to all Catholics to rediscover our faith during the "Year of Faith" for the worldwide Catholic Church. We will be guided by the US Bishops' teaching, "Disciples Called to Witness - The New Evangelization", and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Jack Mooney is former El Paso Diocesan Director of Adult Religious Formation. He has a Certificate in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans with a Specialty in Spirituality and is Adjunct Faculty at Tepeyac Institute. Jack has presented throughout the country retreats, parish renewal programs and teachings and work-shops on Evangelization, spirituality and Liturgy.

7.Environmental Justice in the Paso del Norte

An introductory course to the environmental issues of the El Paso/Juarez region. We will begin with the basics of Environmental Science, then discuss the environment of the Paso del Norte re-gion from a scientific standpoint, and finally we will discuss Environmental Ethics from a Biblical standpoint. On Wednesday the class will take a field trip to Smeltertown, near Mount Cristo Rey.

Erik Kappus, Ph.D. Cand., He is an Interpretive Naturalist and Geologist with over 14 years of teaching experience in the outdoors. Erik has taught for El Paso Com-munity College, El Paso Independent School District, The University of Texas at El Paso, Louisiana State University, and Houghton College.

10. From Genesis to Evolution: Exploring human origins

Participants in this course will learn how Catholic belief does not contradict science, especially evolution. The course examines the biblical, scientific and theological notions of the origin of hu-manity. Required text for the class is "Genesis Evolution and the Search for a Reasoned Faith" by M.K. Birge, and others (published by Anselm Academic, 2011). Copies are available at Tepeyac. Course is recommended for teachers who teach religion and science.


Fr. Bob Dueweke, O.S.A., Ph.D., is the Director of Tepeyac Institute . He holds a Ph.D. in theology from the University of St. Paul in Ottawa , Canada. Fr. Bob has been a missionary in Peru, has taught in the seminary and has worked for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

12. Walking lightly on Earth: The Spirit and Practice of Simple Living

Climate change is an invitation to take the command of Jesus seriously: love your neighbor as you love yourself. Since the consequences will more dramatically affect the poorest and most vulnerable around the world, how far am I willing to go to radi-cally alter my lifestyle to make it an expression of love for and solidarity with the poor? What level of joy and satisfaction might we discover if our individual and sha-red lives witnessed the authentic Gospel values? We will draw from the wisdom of our families, ancestors, communities and Catholic social teaching to guide our reflec-tions.

14. Divorce and Remarriage in the Catholic Church

11. Sustainability and Christian Mission: the Gospel and the Environment

Participants will examine the Scriptural sources and Magisterial teaching regarding our commit-ment to restore a healthy relationship to the planet, and by the end of the course will be able to provide a theological foundation for a commitment to sustainability as essential to Mission today.

He currently is director of the Columban Mission Center in El Paso, which hosts visiting groups and local organizati-ons committed to human rights, border issues and ecological responsibility.

13. Food, Ministry, Theology and the Earth

Community Con-vida will be an interactive class on cooking, theologizing, caring for the earth and our bodies. We will explore food, ministry and Theology. We will be cooking different dishes every night. As we discuss how communities share food and how we live out our Eucharistic Celebrations in everyday life beyond Sunday Mass.

Neomi DeAnda, Ph.D., a native of El Paso, holds a Ph.D. in Constructive Theology from Loyola University Chicago, where she wrote a groundbreaking dissertation retrieving the writings of Sor María Anna Águeda de San Ignacio (Puebla, Mexico, 1695-1756). Neomi currently directs the Oscar Romero Scholarship Program, the Hispanic Theology and Ministry Program and teaches at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

15. Lectionary Preaching: Learning new styles for proclaiming the word of God

“What does the Holy Spirit want the people of God to hear from these texts on this occasion?” is the question good preachers answer every time they preach. This course looks at how the “homiletical question” is answered as we preach from the lectionary, how to create sermons for contemporary listeners, and how to present sermons from a manuscript, with notes, or from memory.

Bill Brosend, Ph.D., is an Episcopal priest who serves as Professor of Preaching at the School of Theology, the University of the South in Sewanee, TN and as execu-tive director of the Episcopal Preaching Foundation. A graduate of Denison Univ. (BA), Vanderbilt Divinity School (M.Div.) and the University of Chicago (Ph.D.) he is the author of five books, most recently The Preaching of Jesus (WJKP 2010).

20. The 7 Sacraments Instituted by the Lord

The whole liturgical life of the Catholic Church revolves around the Eucharist and the seven sacra-ments. The participants will look at the changing views of how people understand what takes place in sacramental rituals, as well as what is distinctive about each one of the Sacraments.

Manny Barrios Jr. earned a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and is licensed by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Exami-ners. He also earned a Master of Pastoral Studies from Loyola University New Or-leans. Mr. Barrios is currently the Parish Life Coordinator/Church Administrator at Cristo Rey Parish.

19.Ministers: prophets and mystics

A course on the history of ministry, recent studies on theologies of ministries, and the spirituality of ministers for our contemporary global society.

Msgr. Arturo Bañuelas, S.T.D., holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He founded Tepeyac Institute in 1989 and co-founded ACHTUS, the Academy of Catholic and Hispanic Theologians of the Uni-ted States. Fr. Arturo is pastor of St. Pius X Parish which continues to be recognized internationally as an excellent Catholic Parish.

22.Skills enhancement for Adult Leaders working in Teen Ministry

Participants will examine the process of faith development, organization, and best practices for pa-rish youth ministry and its extension into the wider diocese. Participants will discuss how to organi-ze retreats and youth rallies. His book, "Youth Minister Support Manual," will be used as a resource. A retreat day for teens will be offered by Fr. Terry on Saturday, June 22, 9am - 3pm.

Fr. Terry Deffenbaugh, O.S.A., Ph.D., has directed parish missions and adult retreats; his specialty is working with teens. He conducts 200 retreats a year. Confirma-tion, Youth Groups, Junior High School Retreats. As a resource person to 24 Youth Groups in the Chicagoland area, he works with 35,000 teens a year. Fr. Terry has writ-ten many articles for “Church Educator” and five books published by Educational Mi-nistries, Inc.

22.The Gospel of Mark

Mark has a unique understanding of who Jesus is and what I means to be Jesus’ disciple. This course will explore the structure of Mark’s gospel and the main themes of Mark’s gospel as a way to help us understand what it means to be a Christian in today’s world.

25.Is God on Facebook?

Social Media is a new mission field for sharing the gospel. This course will explore some ways to create online ministries. No special online skills needed.

28. Cuando la religión enferma

Taller donde los participantes podrán hacerse conscientes de algunos procesos humanos lastimados (neurosis y compulsiones), que vividos en la matriz religiosa, ésta última se vuelve un proceso poco edificante, altamente nociva y fuera de la dinámica de amor de Jesucristo. Environmental Justice in the Paso del Norte

An introductory course to the environmental issues of the El Paso/Juarez region. We will begin with the basics of Environmental Science, then discuss the environment of the Paso del Norte re-gion from a scientific standpoint, and finally we will discuss Environmental Ethics from a Biblical standpoint. The afternoon portion of the class is a field trip to Paisano St. near Mt. Cristo Rey.

Erik Kappus, Ph.D. Cand., He is an Interpretive Naturalist and Geologist with over 14 years of teaching experience in the outdoors. Erik has taught for El Paso Community College, El Paso Independent School District, The University of Texas at El Paso, Loui-siana State University, and Houghton College.


Fr. Bill Morton, SSC, is a priest of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. His mis-sion experience includes Taiwan, Chicago’s inner city and Juarez, Mexico. He can be reached at missionelpaso@juno.com

 This is the topic of Pope Benedict XVI’s invitation to all Catholics to rediscover our faith during the "Year of Faith" for the worldwide Catholic Church. We will be guided by the US Bishops' teaching, "Disciples Called to Witness - The New Evangelization", and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Jack Mooney is former El Paso Diocesan Director of Adult Religious Formation. He has a Certificate in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University, New Orleans with a Spe-cialty in Spirituality and is Adjunct Faculty at Tepeyac Institute. Jack has presented throughout the country retreats, parish renewal programs and teachings and work-shops on Evangelization, spirituality and Liturgy.

How do we share our gifts of time, talent and treasure with others? How do we know what our gifts are? Stewardship does not ask if you are giving 10% of your gifts to God. Rather, stewardship asks, “What are you doing with the 100% that He gave you?”

Melissa Santos is a native El Pasoan who graduated from the University of Notre Dame, ma-jored in Finance and minored in Public Service. She works for the Foundation for the Diocese of El Paso.

43.Celebrating the vigil and funeral rites

Participants will learn the theology and pastoral implications of the funeral rites. They will also learn how to celebrate the vigil and funeral according to the prescribed rituals. Participants will be certified by the diocese to celebrate at these liturgies. This course offers new guidelines and policies for the diocese of El Paso.

Fr. Marcus McFadin, is the pastor of St. Stephen Deacon & Martyr Parish and director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of El Paso. He is a doctoral candidate at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX.

Msgr. Arturo Bañuelas, S.T.D., holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He founded Tepeyac Institute in 1989 and co-founded ACHTUS, the Academy of Catholic and Hispanic Theologians of the United States. Fr. Arturo is pastor of St. Pius X Parish which continues to be recognized inter-nationally as an excellent Catholic Parish.
